Even a venerable brewery like Guinness is getting in on the craft beer craze. The 200-year old company has released a new twist on one of its signature brews: A version of its Antwerpen Stout that’s aged for eight months inside of Bulleit Bourbon barrels. According to a press release, the beer is aged at the company’s stateside brewery, the Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House in Baltimore, which opened this year.

Although the beer is new, it’s actually a nod to the past—for most of the brewery’s existence, all Guinness beer was shipped and stored in wooden barrels. Using Bulleit’s barrels gives the stout an even more robust flavor profile. “The best part about barrel-aging any beer is that you get the chance to pull the flavors of the wood and liquid previously aged in it,” Guinness Senior Brewer Sean Brennan said in a statement. “This beer is something special, and one to be sipped slow and savored.”

Barrel-aging a stout makes for, no surprise, a heavy hitting beer. The stout has a 10 percent ABV and 52 IBUs. Taste-wise, expect a “powerful and full-bodied” brew with hints of bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit along with a complex, oaky richness imparted by the bourbon barrel. It should make a nice hearty pour for the winter months, and the folks at Open Gate are pleased with how the new beer turned out. “We’ve already started to think about what we’ll be experimenting with next, but we couldn’t be more pleased with our first go at using barrels from our friends at Bulleit,” Brennan said. The Stout Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels is available now in limited quantities (four-packs of 11.2 oz bottles), and it’s on tap at Open Gate until the end of the year.
