Ceremonial first pitches are like a rite of passage. But some men and women have gone down in infamy for having downright awful throws. Here, we rank the worst of the worst.
Jordan Leandre Jordan Leandre has a remarkable back story. The high school junior battled Ewing’s sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) as a kid, USA Today reports. He’s been to Fenway Park many times over the years, but August 2017 was the first time he took the mound. Unfortunately, his pitch was one for the ages… for all the wrong reasons. The errant pitch went wide, going over the catcher’s reach, and nailed a cameraman in the groin. Who says baseball isn’t a contact sport? https://youtube.com/watch?v=op_kJWRIPGM
Tom Brady Tom Brady is a four-time Super Bowl winning QB and has a lot going for him off the field. Brady rose up from an underdog to become one of the greatest QB’s of all time. He is married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen. He’s not afraid to do adventurous things like jump off cliffs, and even has a sense of humor. Brady recently proved that he is not perfect in every aspect of his life, when he threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park prior to Boston’s home opener in April 2015.
50 Cent 50 Cent practically took over the Internet when he misfired—to say the least—the opening pitch at the Pittsburgh Pirates-New York Mets game at Citi Field in June 2014.
Baba Booey Previously and almost universally accepted as one of the worst opening pitches of all-time, Howard Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate let go this gem at the Met’s old Shea Stadium in May 2009.
John Wall Did anyone forget Washington Wizards star John Wall’s horrible toss at an Orioles-Nationals game in June 2011? Is it worse to blow by the catcher by a mile, or hammer a pitch into the dirt? You decide.
Mariah Carey Between the high heels, short-shorts, and electric pink jacket, Mariah Carey had already scored all her points before she reeled back and fired this beauty back in 2008 at a game in Tokyo, Japan.
Carl Lewis There are people around the world who would agree that nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis is one of the greatest athletes ever. He can’t throw, though, as evidenced in this 2003 debacle at Seattle’s Safeco Field.
