California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for three of the state’s counties as wildfires ravaged them over the weekend. Sonoma, Yuba, and Napa counties, wine country, saw at least 1,500 structures burn down, according to NPR.  As of Monday the fires are still raging and have only been 20 percent contained according to the Butte County fire department’s Twitter account, which has been updating the spread of flames.

The San Francisco Chronicle has been documenting the spread and wrote about some of the worst destruction, occurring in Santa Rosa. “Scores of homes were lost in the Fountaingrove area east of Highway 101 and in other neighborhoods including the Journey’s End Mobile Home Park for seniors,” the paper reported. “The Fountaingrove Inn burned, as did the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, a Kmart, a McDonald’s, an Arby’s and an Applebee’s. The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts was damaged.” In Sonoma, Marin, and San Francisco counties, 911 dispatchers were not able to keep up with the volume of incoming calls. Eventually they had to ask residents to only call if actual flames have been seen.  Read the SF Chronicle’s full report on the fires here.
