It’s the tournament that PGA Tour golfers affectionately think of as the “unofficial 5th” major on the schedule. With a field of high-level golfers that rivals any tournament on tour, a huge purse for the winner, and one of the most incredible courses in the country—the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida—The PLAYERS Championship tournament is one golfers look forward to every year.

With the field as strong as it is each year, players on the PGA Tour treat the Players Championship like another major. Taking place from March 12–15 at TPC Sawgrass and with television coverage from the Golf Channel and NBC, 2019 champion Rory McIlroy will be looking to defend his title against a group of incredible golfers when he tees off in the first round. “Last year, it felt like the biggest tournament in the world and there were a lot of players up there,” McIlroy said earlier this year to the PGA while practicing at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. “I think the fact that anyone you go from Fred Funk to Tiger Woods to [Matt] Kuchar to whoever, like everyone and every style of game has won here, which I think makes it pretty tough to win.” Like McIlroy, many other golfers see the tournament as a “major” stop on the schedule: “I feel like I look at this event as basically like a major,” golfer Rickie Fowler said to CNN a few years ago while at the tournament. “It has the major feel, obviously one of the best fields we play all year, on a tough golf course.”

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland holds the championship trophy after winning THE PLAYERS Championship golf tournament in 2019. TANNEN MAURY/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock “This place is great, I love this event. It’s a challenge and the atmosphere here at TPC Sawgrass is incredible,” golfer Billy Horschel told Men’s Journal while at the tournament. “I do think the nickname of the fifth major fits when you think of how guys prepare for it, they really do take it seriously. You can really tell when guys are taking longer on their practice rounds and preparing more. The Ponte Vedra fans and Jacksonville fans are amazing.” Here’s the info you need to keep up with the Players Championship:

Speaking of the course, the Pete Dye-designed venue has become an iconic stop on the PGA Tour for golfers and fans alike. The Stadium Course has become synonymous with THE PLAYERS Championship tournament, and it also happens to be one of the big courses on tour where it’s open to the public and playable by anyone—that’s why Men’s Journal named it as one of our 25 of the World’s Greatest Golf Courses You Can Actually Play On.

The course is a balanced one, giving no advantage to any particular style of play, which helps make the pro tournament exciting, but also gives fans the chance to test out their skills. The course has a mix of short, medium and long holes of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s, and no two consecutive holes ever play in the same direction. The challenge and design of the course gives fans a little bit of everything, and of course, there’s the now-famous Island Green 17th hole, which is a 137-yard par-3 surrounded by water. For any golf fan, this is a hole you simply need to experience at some point, whether you’re playing it or watching it from the grandstands. “Jay [Monahan, the commissioner of the PGA Tour] made a great point earlier,” McIlroy said back in January. “He said it’s the ultimate democratic golf course. It doesn’t favor anyone. You’ve got to show up and hit the shots and play well Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon. You know, I feel like the change to March probably suited me and players that play similar to me more just because it plays longer, it’s a little softer, you can hit driver. It is, you have to learn to play it. I missed my first three cuts here, so it took me a while to figure the place out, but I feel like I finally have it.”
