So yes, we are in fact drinking one of these right now. And yes, we may drink another at some point over the next few weeks. But make no mistake: this is not the kind of bottle you open up every day. Like so many of the beers in Stone Brewing‘s anniversary series, this one is hopped to the high heavens and jacked up to a mind-erasing 9.8% ABV. Packaged in 22oz bombers, you’d be best served splitting it with a friend. Or not. Who are we to judge? It’s a bit on-the-nose, of course, but there’s certainly something cute about a brewery celebrating its 21st year of existence, and it’s nice to see that, for the ostensibly special occasion, Stone brewed a beer that stays true to the company’s roots. They didn’t jump on the ubiquitous tropical/hazy bandwagon everyone’s been riding for the past few years, and they didn’t lean on some dumb concoction of froufrou adjuncts. Instead, they came up with yet another pitch-perfect blend of hops, this one dominated by Mosaic and a lesser known variety called Pekko, yielding notes of pineapple and what we keep experiencing as strawberry? There’s also a notable presence of wheat malt, which creates a thicker, creamier mouthfeel, even further intensifying an already pretty damn intense experience. It’ll set you back somewhere around $10 a bottle — but a small token of our appreciation for all that Stone has contributed to the world of craft beer over the past 21 years.
