Deadpool 2 doesn’t just have raunchy jokes, meta references, winks to other superhero films, and a hilarious Ryan Reynolds—it also has a cameo from one of the biggest movie stars in the world. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, we won’t reveal the name and spoil the cameo right here, but be warned, the name will appear towards the bottom of this article.

After earning over $125 million in its first weekend in theaters and knocking Avengers: Infinity War out of the top spot, the writers of Deadpool 2, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, have been revealing the secrets behind how some of the funniest moments of the movie came together.

One of those moments involves a certain A-list star, and comes towards the middle of the movie when Deadpool assembles his own crew of heroes, a.k.a. the X-Force. The group includes Terry Crews as Bedlam, Zazie Beetz as Domino, as well as a character named Vanisher, who, as you guessed, has the power to “vanish.” The joke during this part of the movie is that Vanisher is invisible, and Deadpool isn’t even sure that he’s shown up when X-Force goes to confront Josh Brolin’s Cable during the major action set piece in the middle of the film.

Once again—SPOILER ALERT.

20th Century Fox / Deadpool The joke pays off after the team jumps out of a helicopter, and Vanisher’s parachute takes him into some electrical cables, which fry him to death. The payoff? Vanisher is played by none other than….Brad Pitt! While only on the screen for a few seconds, the scene is by far one of the funniest jokes in the film, and also another meta-reference to the Deadpool 2 film itself: Pitt was actually considered for the role of Cable in the early stages of production before Brolin came on, so naturally his cameo character is killed by—electrical cables.

Now for the really fun stuff: The writers revealed how the cameo came together in an interview with CinemaBlend, telling the site that Pitt worked for “scale,” meaning he was paid around $950 for his work on the film, far below his usual multi-million dollar paycheck. Pitt only worked for a day on the film, and the shoot took about a half hour to complete. And Pitt’s one demand for doing the cameo? He wanted a specific coffee order delivered to him—by none other than Ryan Reynolds himself. “We shot in about a half an hour,” Reese said. “It was quite a production. It was like a full crew for a half an hour, and Brad agreed to do it for scale, plus a cup of coffee. And then he was really specific about the coffee. He said, ‘I want this exact coffee from Starbucks, and, Ryan, I want you to deliver it to me.’ We got the coffee, Ryan came in and gave it to him. It was hilarious because he kind of forgot that he asked for it. It was really funny. And then we shot it in about a half an hour.” The idea for the cameo came from Reynolds, who basically challenged the team to get the “hardest” cameo they could think of. “The cameo for Vanisher was last minute,” said Wernick. “You never saw Vanisher on screen in the original script, and then getting caught up in the electricity wires and seeing the sparks, and then Ryan had the idea, ‘Oh my God, perfect celebrity cameo. Let’s go after the hardest celebrity cameo we can get.’ And that’s Brad Pitt!” The screenwriters also revealed that Pitt came to the 20th Century Fox studio lot in a shroud of secrecy so nothing would come out about the cameo. “In Los Angeles on the Fox lot is where we did it, in one of the stages,” Reese said. “It was just weird, because he kind of sneaked in, we did it, he sneaked out. No one ever knew. And it wasn’t until the thing screened that anyone had any idea.” Not bad for a day’s work. Deadpool 2 is now in theaters. In order to view the video, please allow Manage Cookies
