In our opinion, there are far too many types of shoes for the outdoors. There are approach shoes to get to a big wall climb, then there are climbing shoes for the climb itself. There are water shoes for long bouts in the stream; low-top hikers for fast hot days; boots for muddy long excursions; race trail runners for speed; supportive trail runners for training; amphibious shoes for water; and so on.

Astral’s roots are in whitewater kayaking — they’re pioneers in eco-friendly personal flotation devices — so they’re no strangers to gnarly portages or amphibious shoes. Because of that, the TR1 is extremely supportive, with an EVA midsole, and has a toe box that can take a hearty punch. Despite being sturdy, the water-draining, hydrophobic upper is partly constructed of mesh, so it drains quickly, dries fast, and feels light. To top it all off, the TR1’s removable insoles are treated with Polygiene to ward off any post-adventure funk.

Its sole is actually made from real “rubber tree” rubber, a compound that’s ridiculously sticky and durable. It adhered like glue to every trail surface, as well as underwater rocks and wet vegetation. The Astral TR1’s are pretty good lookers too; I had no problem wearing them to the local watering hole at the end of the day.
The Astral TR1 Junctions are the perfect adventure shoe for a backcountry canoe or kayak trip, a light hiking excursion, or just a hot summer jaunt at your local beach or wilderness park. Available in brown, gray, or green, they’re well worth the return on investment.
