For actor Christian Bale, playing an Army captain in the late 1800s American frontier for the upcoming film Hostiles probably wasn’t a huge stretch. Throughout his career, the Academy Award-winner’s made body transformation after body transformation, effortlessly disappearing into roles. Whether it’s gaining slabs of muscle to play Batman in The Dark Knight, losing massive amounts of weight for The Machinist, or putting on the pounds for American Hustle and most recently to play Dick Cheney in the biopic Backseat, Bale commits to a role like no other actor in Hollywood. This transformation for Hostiles isn’t an extreme physical change for Bale. It doesn’t look like he’s dropped or added too much weight. But he has adopted a new grizzled look with a super-thick mustache that would make Henry Cavill proud. (Cavill’s rocking one of the best mustaches you’ll ever see for Mission: Impossible 6, see a bunch of awesome photos of it here.) Hostiles is set in 1892, and follows “a legendary Army captain (Bale) who reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne chief (Wes Studi) and his family through dangerous territory,” according to IMDB. Take a look at the intense trailer: https://youtube.com/watch?v=kLXQdkVvvLU Bale has worked in the Western genre before, starring with Russell Crowe in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, and he’s very familiar with Hostiles director Scott Cooper, with whom he worked on Out of the Furnace. Cooper has put together a fantastic supporting cast that includes Ben Foster, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, Rosamund Pike, and Adam Beach. This film could be a major contender come awards time, especially for Bale’s performance. Hostiles had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, and is expected to get a release date for late 2017.
