Go long or go home. That’s the unofficial motto of the Volvik World Long Drive Championship, power golf’s greatest spectacle. Played under the lights at WinStar World Casino & Resort in Thackerville, OK, this year’s championship takes place on September 5 and 6, and will be broadcast live on Golf Channel. The first day of the championships features 16 long-drivers in the Open Division, beginning at 9 p.m. ET. Then, on Wednesday, the quarterfinals, semis, and finals of the Open Division, and the semis and finals of the Women’s Division, commence at 9 p.m. ET. Golf Central will preview live event coverage both nights, including an hour pre-game show analyzing each matchup and interviews with the competitors. Overall, 96 long-drivers round out the field at the start of competition on September 1. But the Open Division is led by current No.1 seed and multiple event-winner Maurice Allen, according to a press release, and also features Ryan Reisbeck (No.2), Justin James (No.3), Tim Burke (No.5), and defending world champion Joe Miller (No.9). A $270,000 purse will be paid out among those advancing to the round of 16 in the Open Division. The winner will receive $125,000; second place will take home $50,000; third and fourth will see $19,500 apiece; and ninth through 16th will each get $7,000. The Women’s Division will pit 2016 champion Phillis Meti against 2017 event-winners Chloe Garner, Troy Mullins, and four-time world champion Sandra Carlborg. Those advancing to the quarterfinals—21 competitors make up the field at the start of the Women’s Division play, with eight advancing to the quarterfinals—will earn a portion of the $40,000 purse, with the winner taking home $20,000; second place getting $8,000; third and fourth each receiving $3,000; and fifth through eighth seeing $1,500 apiece.
