Tony Hawk is clearly not your average professional skateboarder. At 49 years old, he is still the most well-known skater on the planet. And while he may not be dominating the X Games like he did at the peak of his career, he also isn’t slowing down with video parts. For a pro skater at almost 50, it’s pretty much unheard of to start riding for a different company. But that’s exactly what Hawk has done, officially announcing on Instagram yesterday that he is the newest team rider for Lakai shoes.

This would be a good time to tell you that #birdhousesaturdays will be released into the wild on Sep. 29 (digitally & DVD), and that I am officially a @lakailtd team rider. Hawk was most recently sponsored by his own shoe company, Hawk. But the mainstream brand sold at places like Kohl’s, Target and Walmart hasn’t been on the legend’s feet for a while now. In a recent interview with his son Riley and himself in GQ, Hawk can be seen wearing lots of Lakai sneakers (whom Riley rides for). And for his 2016 re-do of his legendary 900, Hawk was wearing Riley’s pro shoe from Lakai. While it remains to be seen if Hawk will have a pro-model shoe anytime soon, it is pretty neat to see him return to a core skate-shoe company like Lakai. Hawk himself even admits in the Instagram post that he’s riding the coattails of his pro skater son. As of press time, no official announcement has been made by Lakai on Hawk being added to their team.
