When Tom Cruise talks about doing his own stunts for the Mission: Impossible series—and likely for the upcoming Top Gun sequel—he puts his money where his mouth is. After performing death-defying stunts like scaling the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and strapping himself to a plane taking off in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie, and the production team upped the ante even more. In M:I6, Cruise literally jumped out of a plane for a HALO (High Altitude Low Open) skydive stunt.

There’s no special effects or CGI tricks on this one. In fact, according to stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood, Cruise became the first actor to do their own HALO jump on camera for a stunt. As this behind-the scenes featurette below shows, Cruise himself performed the stunt from 25,000-feet in the air, zooming towards the ground at over 200 mph. The production team created a custom helmet for Cruise to help complete the stunt, and the actor performed the jump over 100 times to get the scene just right.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout finds Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team butting heads with the CIA and assassins as they try and stop a global catastrophe.
