Draped in a necklace with a tiny gold box, the Karuizawa 1960 is one of the rarest and most expensive bottles of whisky in the world. Only 41 exist, sourced from a now-shuttered Japanese distillery. MORE: The 50 Greatest Whiskeys in the World Until last week, one of the bottles—nicknamed “The Squirrel” by collectors—was part of the prized inventory in “La Maison Du Whisky,” a high-end liquor store in Paris. According to the Daily Beast, at 3.16 a.m. last Sunday, that bottle became part of the prized inventory of a duo of bandits. French police say the thieves broke in to the store and made off with 69 bottles, stuffed in duffel bags. The store estimates the value of the pilfered liquor at $794,000, a big chunk of which came from the Karuizawa. “Because of its rarity, it could be deemed priceless, but the mercenary French press calculated its value at about €195,000 ($230,000),” the Beast writes. Police report the duo is still at large, presumably celebrating their heist with a fine vintage.
