Over 50 years of recording music, Johnny Cash cranked out an astonishing 96 albums. Unearthed, released two months after his death in 2003, was his last—and his most personal. It was a compilation of the best tracks created during a decade of working with legendary producer Rick Rubin, plus alternate takes, covers, and duets with artists ranging from Tom Petty to Fiona Apple. Previously available only on CD, the 79-track album is being rereleased by Universal Music this month as a nine vinyl-LP collection paired with a coffee-table book of extended liner notes, interviews, and photos of Cash and Rubin. The tracks include a searing acoustic take on the country classic “Long Black Veil,” a version of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold,” and perhaps the most haunting cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” ever recorded. The Man in Black spanned the age of vinyl, so it’s only fitting that his most impressive album will be the medium’s most lust-worthy addition in years.
