The North Face is doing more than just celebrating Earth Day this year. The company has launched a campaign, including a Change.org petition, in the hopes of making Earth Day a nationally designated holiday.

During the previous week heading into Earth Day on April 22, North Face launched its “Explore Mode” initiative, which included the petition, as well as partnerships with entertainers, explorers, organizations, and influencers to help spread the word about Earth Day and why it should be recognized as an official holiday. Part of the petition reads that the North Face believes “that Earth Day should be a national holiday – giving everyone time to explore our planet. When people take time to appreciate Earth, they feel more connected to it and are more likely to protect it. That’s why we are taking a stand and committing that on Earth Day we will explore and connect with our surroundings. Sign and share to join the petition to support Earth Day as a national holiday.”

The petition to try and make Earth Day a national holiday was co-sponsored by brands like National Geographic, Clif, S’well, the Girl Scouts, and Headspace. On top of that, for the first time in the history of the brand, North Face has closed all 113 of its stores in the United States and Canada along with its headquarters on Earth Day “to give employees the opportunity to explore out of the office.”

Part of the campaign is also to get people to recognize the beauty of nature and disconnect with their cell phones and technology. As the petition also reads: “Today, we’re spending more time in front of screens than ever before. The average person with a smartphone checks their phone 47 times per day. When we unplug, we’re more open to connect with each other, our communities, and the world around us.” Check out the petition here and more about the North Face campaign.
