About a year ago, SURFER and Volcom partnered up to produce a feature film on the Maui native, Dusty Payne. The direction of this film took an unexpected turn when Dusty suffered a life-threatening injury at Pipeline on January 8th, 2018.
Payne is the type of guy who is every surfer’s favorite surfer, due in large part to his caring personality and genuine lifestyle. In Dusty’s younger years, he was an amateur on Volcom, went pro with Volcom, and continues to represent Volcom at age 29. Over the years, Payne has made a name for himself by free-surfing his way to just about every surf magazine’s cover at an astounding rate. Last January, after going over the falls on a late drop, Payne slammed his head on the reef at Backdoor, was held under for 1 minute and 20 seconds. He was left unconscious with a fractured skull and jaw. Payne was revived on the shore by lifeguards to then be rushed to the hospital. Payne reflects on the incident, “When I woke up, I couldn’t see out of my right eye because my eye socket was caved-in, which required them to rebuild the whole area. I got 6 plates in my head and 3 in my jaw – I fractured my jaw in 2 difference places and I broke my temporal bone. I just really want to thank everybody who was there to help save me and keep me alive today.”

Just 5 months later, Payne got back in the water with his family for a mellow and therapeutic longboard session. Dusty has been on a tear lately and is on the road to a full recovery.
