If history has taught us anything, it’s that child-actors rarely escape the throngs of movie and television stardom unscathed. With a starring role on Empire, a new album, and a Ridley Scott-produced flick under his belt (he was in 2017’s Alien: Covenant), Jussie Smollett is proving otherwise. We briefly chatted with the actor to talk all things music, where he gets his confidence, and the one drink he’ll always down. You were in the movie, The Mighty Ducks. What do you remember most about filming? Paula Abdul coming to set. I remember her wearing these Converse sneakers with heels and thinking ‘I have never seen those before.’ I also remember performing at Prince’s club there, rest in peace. Your new record, Sum of My Music, dropped this month. One of the tracks is titled ‘Insecurities.’ What are yours? Honestly, I have a lot of insecurities, but one of my biggest is not telling my family or team how much I love and appreciate them. That’s a big fear of mine. What are you most confident about? I’m most confident about my sense of love and loyalty. I know that everything else about me is debatable, from my talent to my looks to the way I dress, but I know my sense of loyalty isn’t debatable. Another of your songs is titled, ‘Staycation’. If you had a day off, where would you spend it? Definitely on a beach with my family or boo. Or both—they all love each other, shit. After a long day, what’s your go-to drink? I recently partnered with Crown Royal, so honestly, my favorite is their Crown Apple. I keep on sipping on that all day today, which I need to stop. Drink that very responsibly because it’s delicious. You’re starring on a huge television show, have performed at the White House for Obama, and sustained a career over 20 years. Do you still get nervous going on stage? Yes. I get freezing cold, and once I’m on stage or on set, I start burning up. Right now, I’m calm though—interviews are easy.
