Bob Purdy, founder of Paddle for the Planet and World Paddle for the Planet Day, star of “The Paddler” movie and a leading proponent of using SUP to inspire environmental activism, died this week at age 64 after a battle with cancer. Purdy spent his life standup paddling—between 2011 and 2016 he paddled more than 2,000 consecutive days to raise awareness for the environment—and dedicated his pursuit to “changing the way we live on the planet” through his organization and movements in the SUP community. Purdy’s dedication to the environment stems from a life spent paddling in the pristine wilderness near his home in Ucluelet, British Columbia. As he once put it, “paddlers can relate to our message because being out on the water leads to a love for your surroundings and what we love we will protect.” Purdy leaves behind his wife Sharon and a community of grateful mourners and inspired activists continuing his legacy of paddling for the planet.
