Strava has just announced a whole slew of features, now available to any users with a premium account, that are more like added perks perks than the everyday tools athletes can use to track and improve their performance. The one we’re most stoked on? Free accidental damage coverage up to $600 for smartphone/GPS devices used while recording Strava activities (because no one wants to deal with a shattered screen after suffering a cellphone causality while checking their pace mid-workout). Other practical new perks include taxi reimbursement for mechanical breakdowns so your wallet won’t take a hit if you find yourself 40 miles out on a training ride with a flat tire or broken chain — as well as race insurance for total registration reimbursement if you get injured during the race.

Aside from the sensible benefits of the new Strava upgrades, having a premium account now allows users to get exclusive discounts from sportswear and recreation companies. Partnership discounts include a free six-pack of energy gels from Science in Sport with an order of $20 or more, five dollars off each Shower Pill antibacterial body wipes order you make, 20 percent off a $100 purchase from New Balance or Competitive Cyclist, and a free two month trial of Audible with your choice of three audiobooks (for those long haul training days).

Paying for a fitness tracking app seems stupid when there are free apps running amuck all over iOS and Android, but for the frugal athlete upgrading to premium and using the potential savings (lots of money in phone damage or taxi rides) and benefits (more than $200 in partnership discounts) could be enough to bite the bullet and pay the the $7.99 per month or $59.99 annual fee. You can download Strava for iOS or Android and upgrade to Strava Premium here.
