Gerry Lopez, aka Mr. Pipeline, is set to have a documentary made about his truly legendary life. Patagonia announced via Instagram that they have teamed up with filmmaker and Dogtown Z-Boy Stacy Peralta to create a film about Lopez’s life.
Patagonia Films and Stacy Peralta (@peraltastacy) are collaborating on a feature-length documentary about the unique lines Gerry Lopez has drawn through the course of his life. Like all of Stacy’s films, it will be stacked with archival material, and if you’ve got any old photos or reels in your personal collection that might make the cut, we’d love to see them—whether they’re from Gerry’s early days in Hawai’i or his pioneering explorations in Bali and beyond.⠀ ⠀ Contact us at gerrylopezthefilm@patagonia.com, and you’ll be fairly compensated for any material used.⠀ ⠀ Photo: Jeff Devine A post shared by Patagonia (@patagonia) on Jan 30, 2018 at 9:08am PST
Lopez of course was one of the first to truly hone the skill of getting barreled at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, being the standout of the Stylemasters era. He helped lead the shortboard revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s with his Lightning Bolt surfboards, creating single fin pintails that were meant for the deep, heavy barrels Pipeline offered.
He grew weary of the crowds at Pipeline, and found his way to Indonesia to search for new waves. He came across waves like Uluwatu and G Land, hunkering down in Indo to enjoy uncrowded perfection.
These days, Lopez resides in Oregon shaping surfboards, snowboarding, river surfing and devoting himself to yoga. At 69, Lopez is not slowing down anytime soon and a documentary on his iconic life is something surf fans should be rightly excited about.
Especially one made by Peralta, of Powell-Peralta fame. There is no one more suited to tell the tale of Lopez’s life — Peralta told the story of Dogtown and The Z-Boys in his award-winning documentary.
And Patagonia even wants to enlist the likes of the public, making a request for any classic photographs or reels of Lopez. If you do happen to have some archival footage or photos, you certainly should shoot an email to gerrylopezthefilm@patagonia.com as Patagonia will compensate you for helping out with the film.
Details are sparse as of now, but stay tuned for more on this from ASN. You’re not going to want to miss this one.
