South Shore Paddleboards shop owner Karen Marvin was fast asleep at home near Babylon, New York when her telephone rang at 5 a.m. On the other end, a local business owner told her about a fire in the business park where her shop was located, and said that she’d better get down there to save what she could before it was too late. Marvin hung up the phone and headed straight for her shop. A raging fire raced through the Babylon Village shopping center and destroyed several businesses in the quiet Long Island community. Marvin’s shop was mostly spared by the flames, but it did sustain significant smoke and water damage, leaving Marvin to pick up the pieces and wonder what’s next.
A tearful Marvin updated her followers in a heartbreaking Facebook Live video about the damage to her business and concerns for the future. She is currently not allowed to enter the property and won’t be able to see the full extent of the damage until she walks through the building in the coming days with her insurance agent and lawyer. She also mentioned hearing rumors about the entire plaza being demolished, but that would all be speculation at this early stage. Of course, the local standup paddling community was there immediately to offer support upon hearing about the fire. Within only two hours of posting the video, Marvin was flooded with scores of comments from both patrons and friends offering support, prayers and well wishes. Despite the ordeal and uncertainty, Marvin told a local news affiliate that she still planned to hold their Earth Day Cleanup at Babylon Creek. The devastating news comes on the heels of Marvin’s successful business becoming a true staple in the Long Island community. She won SUP Connect’s SUP Shop of the Year in 2017 and SUP Magazine recently featured her store in our Shop Talk section only two months ago. Despite the setback, the SUP community is strong and hopefully will help Marvin get re-open before too long. We’ll keep you updated with developments to this story.
