The board sports of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding tend to follow trends, especially when it comes to video editing techniques. So it’s always refreshing when something new comes along and shakes things up a bit. Which is exactly what filmmaker Youri Fernandez does in this new edit “On/Off”.

Skater’s Paradise: On/Off – NOWNESS from NOWNESS on Vimeo. Filmed in Berlin, it follows four skateboarders (including Fernandez himself) and flips a switch between day and night instantaneously. “On/Off” presents a stark contrast between day and night, bringing to light the vast differences in the activity depending on the time it is being done. This is not Fernandez’s first dabble in skateboarding as an art project. “On/Off” is part of his ongoing project “How Many BPM?” that once provided a visual and audio experience of skateboarding in the Parisian gallery l’Hermitage. All in all, “On/Off” is a very welcome mix-up and hopefully spurs further exploration in edits.

Day and night skating.
