One year ago, Danish paddler Casper Steinfath made history. After nearly 19 hours, the 24-year-old stepped off his board and onto Norwegian soil–the first person to standup paddle across the Skagerrak Straight, a 130-kilometer (80.8-mile) stretch of frigid, turbulent ocean separating Denmark and Norway. The Viking Crossing had humbled him. “None of the four world titles (I’ve achieved) come close to what I experienced today,” Steinfath said at the finish. “I didn’t feel I conquered (Skagerrak), Skagerrak conquered me.” Of course, words often fall short of conveying the intensity of those challenges. What Steinfath felt when beginning his 16th straight hour of paddling, with hours of open water still ahead. Or how the Skagerrak’s rough currents and frigid temperatures constantly threatened to buckle him into its icy grips.
