After wearing a mask for most of his last film in Deadpool 2, Ryan Reynolds is getting behind another face for his next major project. In the first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Reynolds voices the iconic Pikachu, bringing his classic self-deprecating and sarcastic jokes throughout.

This first look at the film shows just how realistic Pikachu and the other Pokémon will be. While they’re all made with special effects, the creatures look pretty real next to Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), who plays the main character Tim Goodman. The movie will follow Goodman as he searches for his missing father with the help of Detective Pikachu. In order to view the video, please allow Manage Cookies
The big twist in the film—and the thing that brings the most humor—is that Goodman is the only one who can actually hear Pikachu speak. Everyone else hears the usual “Pika! Pika!” from Pikachu, but Goodman can actually have a real conversation with Pikachu, with some help from Reynolds of course. Here’s a look at the second full trailer for the film:

Warner Bros. The superstar actor, who is the face of Aviation Gin and got shredded for his role in Deadpool 2, didn’t have to physically get in shape for this movie, but he had to put his voice to work. Just like actors Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, who voice Marvel heroes Rocket Racoon and Groot, Reynolds has made Pikachu all his own, and it looks like he has the chance to give an iconic and hilarious voice performance in this movie. UPDATE: Here’s another look at the film, with a TV spot that aired during the NFL Playoffs:

Take a look at the trailer here, filled with Reynolds’ many jokes:
I think we all knew I’d wind up as a miniature detective repeatedly saying the same two words. Just didn’t think it’d be this soon. #PikaPika #DetectivePikachu pic.twitter.com/L4iB760fJO — Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) November 12, 2018
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released on May 10, 2019.
