Let’s get one thing straight: I have always been a Keurig skeptic. A lifelong fan of my trusty French press, I’d grumble and gripe about the popular home brewing system any time one came into view. In my experience, Keurig coffee had been nothing but watered-down and well, disappointing. (And the last thing you want to drink at the crack of dawn is a depressing cup of Joe.) So when the nice folks at Keurig offered to send me their latest and greatest brewer, the K-Elite, to test out I was hesitant, but ultimately agreed. And now I feel like a fraud. Why? I love the damn thing. I love it as much as you can love any kitchen appliance, which for me is saying a lot.

The K-Elite is the most polished Keurig yet—its brushed metal exterior (available in silver or slate) is fingerprint resistant and stylish enough to enhance the look of any countertop. It’s also the most versatile machine they offer, with features like a “Strong Brew” button (which actually does produce a more intense flavor), a “Brew Over Ice” option (hello, summer), and temperature adjustment all just a touch away. For those of you that don’t like the idea of water just sitting in that reservoir tank, the K-Elite comes with a built-in water filter. (It might be just placebo, but I swear I can taste the difference.) One niche function I didn’t get the chance to try out is the “High Altitude Setting,” which ensures you get the same quality java at 5,000 feet and beyond, but it could come in handy for anyone living significantly above sea level.

At the end of the day, anything that comes out of a Keurig probably isn’t going to taste as good as something you might buy at your favorite coffee shop, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a worthy competitor in the home brewing system category. At $170, this dependable single-serve coffee maker churns out consistent, quality coffee (I’m admittedly less crazy about the tea and hot chocolate options) that I can’t seem to get enough of.
