What makes a great daily driver? If you’re going to spend an hour or more a day in a car, it’s got to be comfortable. It’s gotta have room for a couple of passengers (in case you want to use that car pool lane—F.Y.I., kids in carseats count), good cargo space and, maybe most importantly, it has to be a little fun. The Genesis G80 Sport ticks all of these boxes and then some. It’s a luxury sedan with all the features to keep the driver plus three adult-sized passengers comfortable when the traffic gets thick. And when gridlock abates, the G80 Sport has got the kind of muscle car power for a more playful driving experience. It’s got some serious power. Number one with a bullet! The Genesis’s 3.3 liter V-6 puts out 365 HP and a beastly 376 lb-ft of torque, effortlessly moving the G80 Sport from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. It’s a quick whip, but where you really notice the power is during overtaking on the highway. Massage the accelerator slightly to pass a slower moving car like it’s parked. Mash the pedal to the floor and the Genesis thrusts you deep into the seat as you feel your throat creep into your mouth. In other words, it’s pretty damn fun to drive.
It’s a smart car. You can use Google Assistant to control your Genesis just like you would at home. With voice commands, you can start the car, lock or unlock the doors, adjust the climate control, and pre-set navigation destinations, which not only saves time, but also the frustration of manually entering a GPS location. Also, being able to fire up the A/C well before you take off means you never have to get into a hot car again. It became a game-changer for this tester.
It’s built with an impressive sound system and other must-have features. The G80 Sport comes loaded with a plethora of luxe details and features standard, like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats (a near necessity in southern California during our testing), and a multi-view parking camera, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control (also a must for Los Angeles), and a touch screen info system. But our favorite is the 17-speaker Lexicon sound system. Nothing helps alleviate the misery of a traffic jam like great music at a substantial volume. So, whether you like to crank up some classic Hendrix or check out What’s Good on the Pitchfork playlist, the Genesis’s cockpit is about as good a place to listen to your favorite jam as you will find outside of Electric Ladyland Studios.
Your oil change comes to you. Genesis offers a unique service program: For the first three years or 36,000 miles, you don’t have to take your car in for maintenance. With a call to the dealer, they’ll come and get it, leaving you a loaner till your Genesis is back in your own driveway. So you won’t have to waste part of your Saturday drinking mediocre car dealership coffee and reading an extremely well-worn copy of a car magazine circa 2010. Instead, you can still do that from the comfort of your own house.
You get your money’s worth. While it’s not what we could call cheap—$57,000 fully-loaded, (it only comes one way), the G80 Sport is a value proposition. A comparably horsepowered base Mercedes-Benz E400 4MATIC starts at a few dollars under $60,000—and you’ll still need to shell out around $10,000 more for the amenities you’ll find in the G80. The Audi A7 begins a shade under $70,000, and will requires a few thousand more in options.
