The video Puma produced to launch a new line of shoes in India called “Suede Gully,” is slick. It features musicians and dancers performing inside a train and in front of buildings in Delhi. The surfaces are spray-painted in multi-colored graffiti to “capture the grit of Indian streets,” according to the company.
Unfortunately, that grit pissed off conservationists around the world’s largest nation. They claim Puma irreversibly damaged 19th century buildings in the city’s Old Delhi district, according to the Guardian. “This is in effect defacing a heritage area,” historian Rana Safvi told the paper. According to the story, the creative agency that worked with Puma to make the video was unaware the buildings were part of a heritage site. The company received permits to film and paint in the area and said it will restore the facades. “The owner wasn’t aware that his property is protected as a heritage property and hence we were not made aware,” a spokesperson for the agency said.
