According to The Spectrum, the animal was killed on or about January 20—while the park security staff was on furlough. National parks were kept open during the government shutdown, even though the staff on duty was limited. Someone took advantage of the lack of security and took down the expecting elk. The animal’s innards and hide were found along a road inside the park, officials said. The US Department of Interior decided to keep national parks open during last weekend’s three-day shutdown, even though employees would not be present. A $1,500 reward is being offered for information about the kill.
