Simon Emmett Summer is a season of endless fun and adventure, and the July 2018 issue of Men’s Journal is here to help you plan your best season yet—from A to Z. And we literally mean from A to Z. Our comprehensive guide to acing summer includes everything from renting an Airstream trailer to teaching your kid how to fish with a Zebco rod and reel. In GearLab, we’ve identified the best stuff you need to get the most out of a lakeside retreat, as well as the top tents on the market right now, and the coolest side-by-sides (or multi-passenger utility vehicles, to the uninitiated) to cruise through the great outdoors. There’s also an assortment of the most-fashionable Hawaiian shirts—yes, they’re back—and a primer on grilling the most delicious part of the fish: the collar. If lounging in the A/C and beating the heat is more your speed than outdoor adventures, you can always read the tales of four Army veterans who rode motorcycles all the way from Alaska to the tip of South America, completing a 5,000-mile trip of two whole continents. If you need some inspiration for your next big trip, check out Aaron Gulley’s guide to Colombia, a country whose new peace has opened up a remote interior to hardy travelers in search of fishing, diving, and birding adventures. In another incredible story, Stayton Bonner profiles John Arthur, easily the toughest man in America, and one of the world’s most legendary boxing trainers. It’s a seemingly odd profession for a man who never competed as a pro boxer or a kickboxer. Instead, Arthur relies on his skills from years of bare-knuckle brawls in the far-flung corners of the earth and, even more improbably, his stint hunting down some of the nation’s worst criminals as an undercover agent. “The bare-knuckled fighting never bothered me,” he told Bonner. “But the first time I shot a guy—that still haunts me.” On the big screen, in his new Marvel action movie Ant-Man and the Wasp, our cover guy Paul Rudd also looks pretty tough—even if his character shrinks down to a diminutive size. But in real life, Mickey Rapkin discovers that he more or less lives up to his reputation as the nicest guy in Hollywood. For the issue, Rapkin spent a day with the actor, talking about the incredible feat of getting abs at age 49 and being the funniest self-described non-comedian in entertainment today. You’ll find all that and more in the July issue of Men’s Journal, which is on newsstands coast to coast starting June 1.
