Everybody has an opinion on something that has never happened. I would chalk that up to how much each and every one of us loves skateboarding as it is—pre-Olympics—and our fears, real or imagined that being a part of the biggest sports event on the planet might change that....

While the United States continues a controversial fight for public lands, American philanthropists are creating the opportunity to conserve natural lands for the public south of the border. On Monday, Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet and Kristine Tompkins—the founder and CEO of Tompkins Conservation—signed the largest national park donation (public or private) in history. The designation protects 10 million acres of new land in Patagonia—a place near and dear to Tompkins. Although she is a California native, Tompkins served as the CEO of the clothing company Patagonia before marrying Doug Tompkins, a founder of The North Face and Esprit clothing companies....

Drums are more than a thing that annoys your neighbors. It seems the instrument can change the architecture of your brain. A study in the journal Brain and Behavior put 20 professional drummers into an MRI scanner. It found that longtime drumming strengthens the corpus callosum, the large structure that connects the two brain hemispheres. It’s probably because drumming requires such advanced motor functions, with the left and right hands working independently of each other....

I paddled out to Log Cabins alone in the morning and (big-wave surfer) Kohl Christensen was the only other guy out. The waves were 45 to 50-foot on the face. I ended up taking a 30-foot wave on the head and breaking my leash and my board, but the swell was so good I still surfed two more times that day (laughs)....

A new Budweiser beer is set on changing the rules of pouring for American lagers. This week, the Budweiser brand unveiled Nitro Gold: a nitro-infused new lager available this month. Nitro infusion isn’t new to beers, and a prominent example you might first consider is Guinness, with its “widget” designed for releasing nitrogen into the beer to recreate those tiny, silky bubbles from a can or bottle.
