This week, Nissan released video of an exciting project it’s been working on at the company’s Japanese research facility: connecting a driver’s thoughts to the actions of its cars. It’s pretty wild. In the three-minute clip, Nissan researcher Lucian Gheorge explains new technology that measures a driver’s brain waves as they help guide an autonomous car. Essentially, the car is reads your thoughts to help predict which move you’re going to make next.

Gheorge says in the video the car can tell what the driver is going to do in the next 300 milliseconds. “Then we can use this window in time to enhance the execution, synchronizing the support of the AV with your own actions,” he says. The car wouldn’t be doing all of the thinking; rather, the driver would be melding with the car to make more informed choices on the road. “When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines,” said the carmaker’s executive vice president Daniele Schillaci. “Yet [brain-to-vehicle] technology does the opposite, by using signals from their own brain to make the drive even more exciting and enjoyable.”
While the technology hasn’t been implemented in any of Nissan’s cars yet, it’s early capabilities will be introduced to the world at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this weekend.
