While the paddlesports industry has fractured a bit on the trade-show front, there are still lots of cool products at the Outdoor Retailer annual Summer Market show for paddling enthusiasts. The following is a rundown of cool new stuff we spotted around last week’s trade show in Denver. Stay tuned later this summer for even more new paddling products, which we expect to be released at the second annual Paddlesports Retailer show coming August 27–30 in Oklahoma City.
Whatever Floats Your Boat
Dagger Stratos 12.5
The all-new Stratos 12.5 expands the offerings of performance touring kayaks from Dagger Kayaks. A true focus on performance in moving water elevates this new shorter boat over its sibling, the Stratos 14.5. With this new boat you get a bulkhead footbrace and proper recovery points. The Stratos 12.5 will be available in both S and L sizing. It will hit a dealer near you in April of 2019 with an MSRP of $1,249. All 2019 Stratos will also be available in Dagger’s Aurora colorway.
Kokopelli Rogue
Kokopelli Packraft has introduced a new Kevlar-reinforced floor packraft called the Rogue. Besides being durable, this decked boat packs up super small and is designed to handle Class I-II rapids. Spec-ed with a TiZip storage entry zipper, the Rogue will set you back $1,200, which includes a skirt. (7.2 lbs / 90” L / 37” W). (Check out a pre-order special offering $200 off the price tag)
Riot Mako 10 Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak The Mako 10 pedal-drive fishing kayak just hit the market (as did a 12-foot Mako, pictured above). It is full featured with bow rocker making it ready to slay some off-shore fish. The real surprise is the price. Only $999 for a pedal-drive kayak! (10’ / 36” W / 66 lbs / 470 lb capacity)
On Water Safety
Fox FuZiun CMG The Fox 40 Classic whistle has long been the go-to on-water safety whistle for paddlers. The new Fox FuZiun CMG whistle offers an even more effective safety whistle, as its design allows the sound it produces to travel farther. The new cushion mouth grip whistle puts out 118db and will cost you $19.99.
NRS Raku PFD The Raku PFD is a new take on a full-featured kayak fishing PFD. It offers a full thin back, with no pillow. It is perfect for those super plush high-back fishing kayak seats. The Raku will be available in the spring for $159.95 and come in orange or charcoal.
Morakniv Floating Serrated Knife An on-water rescue knife should be durable, rust-proof and secure, bonus if it is lightweight and can float. The new Morakniv floating serrated knife is all of the above. It offers a blunt tip, stainless-steel serrated blade, cork handle and high-vis secure sheath. It is 9.25” and only 3.7 oz. It will hit the market in late 2018 with an MSRP of $27.
For The Ladies
Tinkle Belle There are quite a few stand-up-to-pee options out there for ladies, which is key for many river days that require a drysuit. Tinkle Belle has just started shipping their solution. It is a fold-up funnel solution that is claimed to be easier and less messy to use than the alternatives. It is a full 9” long and will set you back $27.50. Watch the Tinkle Belle video:
Dressed For Success
Chaco Torrent Pro While the traditional Chaco sandal has long been a favorite of river lovers around the globe, especially rafters, they generally don’t fit too well in kayaks. Chaco has heard your cries for a solution and now offers a full-featured water shoe, the Torrent Pro. It offers a full knitted polyester upper, synthetic overlays for added structure and toe protection, 3mm heel to toe drop and a ChacoGrip Plus rubber outsole with razor siping. The Torrent Pro is also super light, at only 9.4 oz. The Torrent Pro will be available in early 2019 in both men’s and women’s sizing and colors, a full 4 men’s colors, 5 women’s colors. MSRP $130.
Helly Hansen HH Lifa Active Lite While you can buy the HH lifa Active Lite baselayers from Helly Hansen now, you can’t get the S’café version until 2019. S’café integrates a fiber made of coffee that helps the shirt retain a UPF 50 rating, when wet and dry, and never washes out. The shirts will cost between $35-$65 and come in men’s SS, LS and LS Polo and women’s singlet, SS and LS.
Body Glove Halo
The Halo is a new river bootie for SUP and kayaking that was designed in cooperation with Corran Addison. It is really lightweight, offers good ankle protection and has an adjustable “DCS,” drainage control system, on the bottom. A limited initial run will hit dealers in March of 2019 for an MSRP of $100.
Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm It’s important to protect yourself from the sun, wind and rain when out paddling. Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm Hat has you covered. This waterproof sun hat is perfect in both amazing and horrible weather. It offers UPF 50+ sun protection, reflective back accents for visibility, two adjustments to keep it from blowing away, is crazy lightweight at only 2.9oz and collapses super small for storage. The new hat will hit stores in the fall for an MSRP of $54.
Keep It Dry
Otterbox Yampa Dry Duffle A hot item for all outdoor adventurers at OR this year was the Yampa Dry Duffle from Otterbox. This duffle bag is perfect for general adventure travel, rafting trips, kayak fishing missions or just a day at the lake on the powerboat. The Yampa comes in 35L, 70L and 105L sizes, has an MSRP of $249/299/349 respectively and will be available in August.
Kokatat Odyssey Sea Kayak Drysuit Kokatat makes quality paddling gear for all types of on-water activities. Their new Odyssey drysuit is custom tailored to the sea kayak adventurer and is packed with quality technical features. It comes with a YKK nylon zipper, removable hood, pile-lined collar, built-in face guard in the storm hood and features tried and true GoreTex. It will come in both men’s and women’s sizing, with the women’s suit offering up a relief zipper that has a forward angle, vs the traditional U shaped zipper. The new suit will hit markets in early 2019 for $1,290. It is also part of Kokatat’s custom suit program, which allows you to dial in the fit and choose custom color configurations.
Rack It Up
Yakima Big Catch Many kayaks, especially fishing boats have gotten quite big and heavy. Yakima has you covered with the new Big Catch kayak cradles. These rack cradles are designed to carry up to a 150-pound kayak, and work well with the flatter and wider hulls found on fishing kayaks. The Big Catch will hit the market in early 2019 and retail for $199.
Thule Compass Thule has done it once again and created a rack attachment that is ready to handle all your water toy carrying needs. The new Compass rack attachment can carry two sea kayaks or whitewater kayaks at a time, or the vertical support can be quickly and easily pivoted out of the way to carry a big kayak or multiple surf or SUP boards.
