The surviving members of the Beastie Boys, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond, have released a new book, and it’s just as weird, messy, and wildly entertaining as you’d expect.   In order to view the video, please allow Manage Cookies

Titled simply Beastie Boys Book and published by Spiegel & Grau, it’s a wide-ranging retrospective on the legendary hip-hop group’s career, covering everything from their start in 1981 as a hardcore band to their rise to superstardom as a genre-bending supergroup.

This is no ordinary memoir. Horovitz and Diamond trade off retelling the history of the band from day one, and their funny, honest accounts of their “transition from teenage punks to budding rappers” makes for a very entertaining read. But some of the most interesting parts of the book are the Beasties lore and Easter eggs, if you will: You’ll find rare photos, illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roi Choi, a graphic novel, essays, and contributions from the likes of Amy Poehler, Colson Whitehead, and Wes Anderson.

Of course, the music is front and center in the book, and according to one reviewer at The A.V. Club, it contains detailed notes on each track from all of the group’s albums, as well as playlists and backstories on the Beasties’ prodigious sampling across genres. From cover to cover, there’s plenty of material to please casual fans and die-hard Beastie lovers alike. The hefty hardcover book is on sale now for $30, and it’s also available in e-book and audiobook versions.
