The worst part is, most of those items were probably purchased when Barack Obama was a junior senator from Illinois. The same issues plagued Michael and Laura Dweck when they got married and settled into a Manhattan apartment. When her new husband’s sock and underwear drawer wouldn’t close anymore due to being overstuffed, Laura insisted he get rid of anything that he hadn’t worn in more than a year. It turned out to be 90 percent of his drawer. For Michael, the experience of buying new basics to replace some of the old stuff sounded like a daunting nightmare. Laura, with her background in fashion, and Michael turned this conundrum into a thriving business. Their company, Basic Outfitters, specializes in what they call a “create a drawer” service, providing sock undergarment essentials suitable for any man. It’s similar to companies like Trunk Club and Stitch Fix. Unlike those other sites, though, Basic Outfitters is not a subscription service, so there’s no commitment.

At the website, choose from different categories and styles — socks, underwear, t-shirts, as well as joggers that double as loungewear, from basic white crew socks to dress socks in funky patterns. You get up to 19 items for $60, half of what it would cost to get the items piece by piece on the site. We tried it out, getting the no-show socks for summer; some fun boxer briefs to replace older ones that were in bad need of being tossed; a three-pack of v-necks in a striking range of blues; and new joggers. Ordering took five minutes, although one could spend a heck of a lot more time parsing out the different options. When the items arrived a few days later we were impressed by their quality, especially for the price point. We’re not alone in that assessment. The Dwecks appeared on the TV show “Shark Tank” in January and while they didn’t get any financial love from the investors on the show, the exposure was a big boon for the company. They’re expanding the men’s line with hoodies and henleys along with introducing new fabrics. They also have plans for a women’s collection. So take a few minutes to assess your sock and underwear situation and you’ll probably find it’s high time to overhaul your drawers of drawers.
