Since coming into the league in 2017, Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell has established himself as one of the top young players in the NBA. Mitchell was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2018 and helped the Jazz make it into the playoffs in each of his first two seasons, including when the team won 50 games in 2019.

Now, Mitchell has shown he’s one of the most dominant offensive players in the league, averaging 25.2 points per game with 4.7 rebounds on 45.3 percent shooting—all career-bests—during the 2019-20 season. Part of the reason Mitchell has been able to consistently get better and better each season has been due to his focus on his training. Even though Mitchell had a busy offseason this past year, it didn’t keep him from staying on top of his fitness and getting ready for the season. “This offseason was much busier and travel-heavy than in the past,” Mitchell told Men’s Journal. “The D.O.N. Issue #1, my signature shoe with Adidas launched and I played with USA Basketball for the first time, which was an amazing experience, kept me in shape and taught me a lot. All of that shortened my offseason and recovery time but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Since then, I’ve just focused on my typical regimen to get myself ready for my third season in the league.”

Mitchell also has broadened things off the court, partnering with BODYARMOR and joining athletes like Kobe Bryant, James Harden, Mike Trout, and Naomi Osaka on the roster. Mitchell had some fun alongside Harden in this video from earlier this year:

Mitchell spoke with us about his training, working with BODYARMOR, and his expectations for the NBA season. What have been your expectations for yourself and the Jazz offense this season? The goal every year is to continue getting better and take it a step further – both as an individual and as a team. We know there are high expectations and some natural hype coming into the season – given the new guys we’ve added in the offseason – but we just need to take it day-by-day as a team and go from there. I’m excited for this season and of course to be back out on the court with my teammates. How did your partnership with BODYARMOR come together? Why did you want to work closely with this brand? The BODYARMOR partnership came together pretty naturally since I already knew about the brand and was already drinking their hydration products. I had heard about it previously around the league and then hearing it from Kobe [Bryant], mainly the importance of taking care of yourself, what goes into nutrition and staying healthy off the court sealed the deal for me.

Donovan Mitchell / Bodyarmor What does it mean to you to be one of the main faces of BODYARMOR? And to be a part of a group of athletes like Kobe Bryant, James Harden, Mike Trout, and Naomi Osaka with BodyArmor? It’s an honor and a blessing to be one of the faces of BODYARMOR. Having the ability to work with some of their other athletes is incredible – it’s like a family. Seeing all the athletes on our roster, you can tell we’re building something special and I can’t wait to see where this brand will be and how much it will grow even in a couple of years from now. How do you use BODYARMOR in your training routine and nutritional routine to help you stay in shape and hydrated? I use BODYARMOR throughout the day to stay hydrated – whether it’s a game day or an off day. I’m always drinking the BODYARMOR SportWater and then I’ll mix in a sports drink – probably the Tropical Punch flavor – with lunch or dinner. I’m very conscious of what I put in my body on a day-to-day basis and BODYARMOR’s great because it tastes good but packed with potassium and electrolytes and has nothing artificial.

Donovan Mitchell / BodyArmor What are some of the ways you follow your diet to stay in your best shape? Any foods you try and stay away from or always try to eat? Now in my 3rd year, my diet and nutrition habits have definitely changed compared to how they were when I was in college or even my first year in the pros. I’m lucky enough to have a great nutrition staff with the Jazz, but I normally stick to healthy proteins – chicken, some fish – vegetables, fruit and things like that. I used to have red meat much more often but now I’ve found that balance. I’ve also cut down on my guilty pleasure of eating Haribo Gummy Bears – I try and substitute with pineapple.
