A Montana family is mourning the death of one of its members following a tragic ice climbing accident over the weekend. A group of five people, including 74-year-old Elton Adams, a doctor, was scaling ice at Cataract Falls (just west of Augusta, Montana) on Sunday when Adams slipped and fell 90 feet to his death, according to the area’s NBC affiliate KTVH.

Medical personnel were not able to reach Adams until two hours after the emergency call because of the area’s intense weather, even though the search party was equipped with a helicopter. To retrieve Adams’s body, a nearby rancher loaned equipment to the response unit. The area the group was climbing is known to be difficult to reach and had limited cell phone service. Authorities said Adams was an experienced ice climber and knew the area well.
