Like it or not, we’re now living in the wave pool era. Over the weekend you may have been aware that the World Surf League hosted their very first public event at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California. We were on hand for the historic festivities, and it was quite a unique experience. While the surf world was mainly fixated on what was happening in Lemoore over the weekend, some 1,500 miles away in Waco, Texas another wave pool technology unveiled itself. The new wave pool is part of the legendary wakeboarding hub at BSR Cable Park. Dubbed the BSR Surf Resort, the wave was built using the technology of American Wave Machines. Getting help from the likes of Jamie O’Brien, Cheyne Magnusson and other pro surfers, BSR officially unveiled it over the weekend … and the first footage of surfers on the manmade waves dropped today.

The American Wave Machines technology is called PerfectSwell and, according to their website, “is the first and only air-pressure system to create naturally occurring ocean swells for authentic world class surfing.” From the video footage, it seems to offer an experience a little closer to that of being in the ocean rather than the perfection of Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch. There are closeout sections, different peaks to choose from and the need to actually paddle out. It also allows for multiple surfers to be in the pool at the same time, all catching different waves of three-wave sets — unlike the Surf Ranch where only one wave can be ridden one at a time and it takes three minutes until the next wave can be deployed.
“The beauty of our system is that we can deliver all the different faces the ocean throws at you,” Magnusson told Surfer Today. “So, it’s just not one wave. We can make you a point break, a peeling wave, a beach break and give you an air section.” According to an Instagram post, the BSR Surf Resort seems to be opening to surfers next week. At only $60 per hour, it might be the most affordable new wave pool around.
