American Giant, the San Francisco-based clothing company that was universally hailed (including by us) for its full-zip hoodie a few years back, apparently wasn’t satisfied with being known as the best in the business for a single product.  While American Giant has remained closely associated with hoodies, sweatshirts, and tees, they’ve continued to expand into other areas. This month, they launched several new pieces including the Journeyman Sweater ($89), which rivals their fantastic hoodies in looks, comfort, and toughness.

American Giant

American Giant is truly all about “Made in America,” as in a 100 percent US supply chain — “from seed to you,” they like to say. It’s made in North Carolina from Nantucket Fleece, a cotton-poly blend that’s ribbed on the outside and soft on the inside. It has a classic crewneck look, hangs nicely on the body, and has a slightly textured exterior. It’s kind of the best of both worlds, since it looks like an elegant wool crewneck sweater but feels like a super-soft and comfortable sweatshirt. Plus, like everything else American Giant makes, it’s built to last. The sweater has extra-durable seams with five-thread cover stitching and comes in either blue shadow (a dark navy) or super black.

Another noteworthy piece is the Mechanic’s Jacket (above, $228), the first of the company’s structured jackets. It’s made from a water-resistant canvas, has a partial cotton lining, and an invisible elastic shoulder gusset to give you room to move. It’s made in Oakland, California and comes in either cargo green or raven black. For more than 25 years, Men’s Journal has been the expert in all things gear — from mountain bikes to fitness trackers, blenders to watches, and drones to cars.
