Tuesday night, Kanoa Igarashi posted a video on Instagram of his boards that got destroyed on his flight back from Russia. He said, “I’m not going to say what airline it was because most of the times it’s not even the airlines fault! Could be the people that handle the baggage from the certain airports. Anyways! Life goes on.” When similar cases happened to pro surfers Alex Gray, Kelly Slater, and John John Florence, they were quick to take to social media to express their frustrations with the airlines, and ended getting their situations some serious attention.

Several people in the surf world, including Leonardo Fioravanti, Morgan Maassen, Filipe Toledo, Lakey Peterson, Macy Callaghan and a handful others showed their support by leaving light-hearted comments. “That was just a warning for calling my horizons crooked,” joked Maassen. “A little bit of solar resin should do the trick,” said Callaghan. When this same thing happened to Alex Gray last year, he called out American Airlines and news station KTLA 5 ran coverage of it. In 2015, JetBlue charged John John Florence $500 to fly with his boards, only for them to end up getting destroyed. In 2016, Kelly Slater took Instagram to criticize Hawaiian Airlines for their expensive oversized baggage fees that made them over $80 million in 2015. Needless to say, these are issues that surfers have been dealing with for decades. Hopefully Igarashi will receive some restitution for the complete destruction of his boards.
