Netflix is trying to mess with your mind this fall. Fans of dystopian sci-fi thrillers like Black Mirror will appreciate the streaming service’s latest production: Maniac, a dark comedy based on a Norwegian series of the same name. The show stars Emma Stone and a seriously bummed-out (and slimmed down) Jonah Hill as patients who have signed up for a new drug trial designed to help them deal with their mental issues.

Directed by Cary Fukunaga, who notched executive producer credits on shows like True Detective and The Alienist, the series follows Annie Landsberg, played by Stone, and Owen Milgrim, played by Hill, as they undergo an increasingly strange and mysterious pharmaceutical trial run by Dr. James K. Mantleray (played by Justin Theroux). Dr. Mantleray claims that his treatment can repair any mental ailment, and Hill’s character, the son of wealthy New York industrialists struggling with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, signs up hoping that Dr. Mantleray’s pills will finally get his life back on track. As Milgrim and the other patients start popping pills and strapping on bizarre-looking headsets, things get weird in a hurry. Rather than a quick cure, they dive deep into “some multi-reality brain magic shit,” as Stone’s character puts it. Check it out in the trailer below.
Maniac is set for a September 21, 2018 release.
