Jason Momoa might’ve played Aquaman, but his love of the ocean doesn’t end with his fictional DC Comics character. The actor’s been raising awareness for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic. First, he made a video in which he shaved his iconic beard for the cause, which more or less went viral. And today, May 8, Momoa appeared on The Ellen Show to explain his shaving stunt, discuss his new canned water brand, Mana Nalu, and put his tomahawk-throwing skills to the ultimate test for charity. “Even though I’m probably trying to live the best that I can to protect the environment [plastic] is still being made,” Momoa says. “So I just wanted to put an option out there so people could use canned water, because this is 100% recyclable and reusable.”
In an Instagram post after the show aired, he continued to talk about the importance of a plastic-free environment. (Swipe for more informative and hilarious content.) He hopes to have Mana Nalu distributed worldwide by August or September 2019. “I’m gonna have it everywhere… on sets, everywhere we can do it,” he says.

Of course it wouldn’t be The Ellen Show without some entertainment. Momoa gave DeGeneres a few tips on how to throw an axe before he unleashed a frenzy of throws at a target with water bottle cutouts worth $1-5K. DeGeneres had planned to donate $10K to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii for Momoa’s efforts, but he quickly tallied $31K. Good to her word, DeGeneres matched the amount. Oh, and don’t worry, the beard will be back for Aquaman 2.
