So, your handsome head of brown hair is looking … a little less than brown these days. But damned if you’ll be caught getting a dye job at your wife’s salon. That’s oaky — you can keep your pride and still shed the grays with a new shampoo from Just For Men.

Yes, the brand’s been around for forever (30 years, to be exact). But there’s a reason they’re still in business despite all the slick upstarts in today’s men’s grooming market: The stuff works. Even better, the brand never stops innovating.

The process is similar to that of professional salons but far cheaper and way more convenient. And it saves you the mess of mixing and gloves involved in other DIY coloring kits — although be warned that our tester’s finger tips did briefly take on a slightly “enhanced” color after suds-ing. (The bottle instructions, had the tester bothered to read them, do suggest washing your hands with soap immediately after applying.) The good news: If you’re the kind of guy who leaps before he looks, like our tester, nothing will go horribly wrong. but far cheaper and way more convenient. Control GX is great for guys who wanted to ease into the gray-reduction thing gradually. Each shampoo adds a fraction more of your natural hue, and you can use it for a week or two until you like the look, then switch back to your usual shampoo. Just throw this into the rotation a few times a week for maintenance.

The Verdict: After a week of use, Control GX removed about 90 percent of the gray from our tester’s sideburns, and noticeably richened the light brown strands on top. It smelled reasonably normal although not entirely free of chemicals, but that scent did not linger once the hair was dry. As advertised, there was no major hand staining or funky tub residue to contend with. Winner!

Note: Control GX will not work if your hair is already dyed, and doesn’t work as well with blonde or red hair as it does with brown and black.
