When you’re the No.1-ranked golfer in the world, everyone is coming for you. For Dustin Johnson, who has been in the top spot for 63 consecutive weeks, having that target on his back only motivates him more to keep the title. Since breaking through and winning his first major championship in 2016 at the U.S. Open, Johnson has dominated the tour, becoming just the third player in the last three decades to earn 17 PGA Tour wins before the age of 34, according to Bunkered Golf.

How Golfer Dustin Johnson Stays No. 1 in the World

Johnson’s rise to the top of the golf world hasn’t happened by accident. The 6’4”, 190-pound golfer has put a heavy focus on his training and nutrition routine, linking up with trainer Joey Diovisalvi to put together a workout program that’s as intense as any athlete in the world. Depending on the day, you can find Johnson in the gym doing explosive medicine ball throws, powerlifting with squats, deadlifts, and cleans, cardio work on the bike, cable chops, and box jumps to help strengthen his lower body. Give that workout a try, and you’ll definitely be feeling the burn afterward. “I’ve learned so much from Joey D,” Johnson told Men’s Journal. “He’s been my trainer for the last six years. I’ve learned a ton from him about how stay in shape, how to eat right, and how to prepare yourself to be the best.”

The high praise seems to be mutual. Here’s how Diovisalvi describes the golfer: “Dustin is an anomaly, a once-in-a-lifetime athlete in the golf world,” Diovisalvi previously told Men’s Journal. “I’ve been doing this over 20 years, and I don’t know if we’ll see another golfer like Dustin for a long time.” Here’s a quick look at how Johnson gets it done in the gym:

Johnson’s taking his skills down to Ponte Vedra Beach for the Players Championship this week, and he caught up with Men’s Journal to speak about his favorite courses to play, his go-to workouts, and how he fuels his training. If you could use only one type of workout to train for golf, what would it be? That’s a tough one because I normally try to incorporate a little bit of everything into my typical workouts. I’d probably say either strength training or any type of workout that helps improve my balance. I enjoy working out in general, but my least favorite activity is probably running, to be honest. I would much rather bike than run. My college coach used to have us run five miles starting at 6 a.m., so I haven’t been much of a fan since. What’s your nutritional routine and diet like right now? I try to eat pretty healthy throughout the year, whether it’s in-season or not. But I don’t eat much red meat and try to stick with other proteins like fish, chicken, quinoa. Also, I make sure to eat lots of veggies and brown rice, with the occasional pasta dish. What’s your favorite golf course to play? Is there a course you think every man should play at least once in their lives? I have a few favorites. I love all the courses out at Pebble Beach. Riviera is one of my favorites on tour as well. Augusta is obviously at the top of the list—it plays differently every time you go there, and it’s such a cool place to be. Also, Oakmont in the North East is great, too. (Editor’s Note: Johnson won the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont.) You’ve been able to travel a lot during your career. What’s your favorite adventure or trip that you’ve been on in the past few years? Are there any places you’re really hoping to travel to or visit in the future? My favorite place to go is Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas. But I actually just recently came back on a vacation [from] Turks & Caicos—we hadn’t been before but definitely want to go back already. It’s a great place to relax and just chill out, recharge the batteries a bit. How do you fuel up to give yourself energy when you’re training or competing on the golf course? I’ve been working with Bodyarmor for a while and that’s something I’ve used a lot through my career as a pro golfer. Being an athlete, I’m very conscious of what I put in my body; it’s so important for staying strong and hydrated.
