He really is “super.” August 2018 Men’s Journal cover star Henry Cavill plays Superman on the big screen, but when he’s working out in the gym, he looks like he might as well have real-life superpowers. Now, Cavill is beefing up for his role on Netflix’s new series The Witcher.

Cavill got himself in fantastic shape to play the legendary hero in Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, making it totally believable that he was a super-strong alien from the planet Krypton.   In order to view the video, please allow Manage Cookies

He also got himself in prime shape to play a CIA operative in Mission: Impossible — Fallout alongside Tom Cruise. Cavill went through some intense training to get into peak physical shape—he and his trainer detailed those workouts for us, so you can try them too—using squats, kettlebell training, burpees, explosive step ups, chinups, and shuttle runs to get his body ripped. Just like his fellow superhero co-star from Justice League, grizzly man Jason Momoa, Cavill enjoys sharing his workouts on social media, giving us a peek at how Superman gets so, well, super. Here are quite a few times that Cavill was basically Superman while training.   BONUS: Cavill shows off some of his “scars” from working on The Witcher, as well as his sculpted core and six-pack:

The journey continues. Thank you to Mr Dave Rienzi for being such a wonderful guide. My physical journey over the years has been an interesting one, with plenty of pit falls and plenty of moments of reward. I’ve been reflecting on them a lot recently and I’ve been very fortunate to work with some fantastic minds. I’m thankful to them all. Recently I’ve been exploring some of the big players in bodybuilding, both from the past and the present. It’s absolutely fascinating to see what they put themselves through, the drive and mental strength required to get to such a place physically. Phil Heath in particular has caught my eye not only for his achievements but also for his genuinely humble and informative approach to his messaging. All this while being a 7x Mr Olympia.
