Earlier this week, it was announced that Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is scheduled to reopen this Saturday, Sept. 22. And, according to Hawaii News Now, the reopening happens to coincide with National Public Lands Day, which means admission will be free. Since early May, the parks have been closed due to seismic and volcanic activity at Kilauea. The activity has damaged homes, created a small island offshore, and caused much of the area to close.
According to KITV 4: Island News, the following areas are expected to reopen: • Kilauea Visitor Center • Hawaii Pacific Parks Association store at Kilauea Visitor Center • Crater Rim Trail between Volcano House and Kilauea Military Camp • Sulphur Banks Trail • Crater Rim Drive to Steam Vents • Kilauea Iki Overlook and parking lot • Devastation Trail and Pu’u Pua’i • Crater Rim Drive to Keanakako’i Crater • Mauna Loa Road to Kipukapuaulu • Sections of Escape Road from Highway 11 • Chain of Craters Road
