It may cost a little extra to visit three of Hawaii’s National Parks come May 1. According to the Honolulu Star Register, The National Park Service has proposed raising the Tri-Park Pass Fee to $50. This pass gets visitors year-round access to the Hawaii Volcanoes, Haleakala National Parks, and Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. The proposed uptick in price would mean entry would cost the same for annual passes as both Glacier National Park and Acadia National Park.

The fee collecting for visitors started over 20 years ago, and parks get to keep 80 percent of the money. The rest goes towards the six of nine parks that are free and open to the public in Hawaii. Last year, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park received around $6.8 million in revenue from the fees. The current fees and possible raised ones go towards the upkeep of wheelchair accessibility, park lighting, and other maintenance. It also goes into helping protect the parks’ animals and plant life. For those wishing to voice an opinion on the fee increase, an online platform has been made available.
