This August it’s surf’s up for the town of Muskegon—situated along the shores of Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes Surf Festival will be the first of its kind for the lakes, according to professional windsurfer and organizer Joe Bidawid. The fest will kick off August 18 and hopes to not just bring in surfers to the Lake Michigan town, but kayakers, windsurfers, paddleboarders, and all sorts water enthusiasts. Even physical activities outside the aquatic realm, like yoga, will figure into the programming.

“The event is intended to provide a fun and activity-filled day for riders of all disciplines, but will also welcome any people that are currently not involved with any of these sports but aspire to learn,” Bidawid said in a statement to Michigan Live. Perhaps most importantly, there will be a wave generator on location to make sure Lake Michigan has appropriate conditions for surfing of all kinds.
