Texan adventurer Sam Mauldin is not a man to take the easy route. His debut standup paddling experience involved a 100-mile self-supported expedition on the Guadalupe River, not exactly an entry-level gig but one that got Mauldin hooked on SUP nonetheless. His second major outing was SUP descent of a 100-mile section of the Rio Grande through Big Bend, a trip that involved almost as much portaging as it did paddling and resulted in the crew being nominated for Expedition of the Year at SUP Awards. But Mauldin and company’s most harrowing exploits to date came with their latest expedition—a 100+ mile first SUP descent of Nicaragua’s Rio Grande de Matagalpa, a river that runs through the heart of the country and home to Nicaragua’s least hospitable wildlife. They camped in native villages with people who have never seen a SUP before, were chased out of one town at gunpoint, paddled through situations they thought they’d never escape and somehow made it out alive and well with all the footage necessary for Lokal Media House to produce a full-length documentary on the trip. That will be releasing later in 2018, but until then here’s an appetizer—proof that adventure is still alive, well and totally accessible.
