Director John McTiernan has a foreword in the book, describing some of the input he had in creating what has become one of the most iconic action movies of all time. McTiernan writes in the foreword about how the film changed from script to screen, including adding more “fun” and enjoyment to the movie. “We completely changed it from the original screenplay,” McTiernan told Men’s Journal. “The idea was that in my sense that terrorist movies are no fun. Movies need to be fun—that’s why audiences go. There’s something about terrorism that makes everyone feel sad. So we said, these guys are robbers, because everybody likes a good robbery story. You like the good guy and you like the bad guy at the same time in a robbery. You don’t have to question that formula, just look at Ocean’s movies. That was why we made the change.”
Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History McTiernan also said that he’s happy about the way the film has been remembered over the years, and that the franchise has continued to be a successful one. “It’s very nice, it wasn’t what we expected at the time,” McTiernan said. “We were just busy putting one foot in front of the next. The fact that it has endured is wonderful.” You can enjoy the legacy of the film in Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History, which makes for a fantastic holiday gift for any movie fan.
