Since rolling onto the Hollywood scene just over a decade ago in Flags of our Fathers, Scott Eastwood has been a very busy man. Call it good genes (Clint Eastwood’s). Call it talent. Call it luck. Show business usually requires all of the above. Over the past couple years he has starred in six films, including Snowden, Suicide Squad and The Fate Of The Furious. His next, car-stealing thriller Overdrive will release in October, and he recently wrapped filming the highly anticipated sequel to Pacific Rim. “I am very grateful for all the work I’ve gotten over the past few years,” says Eastwood, “I have gotten to shoot in a lot of amazing locations, but it can be really hard to truly appreciate them when you are surrounded by cameras. I find it is important to getaway from everything as often as possible, especially now.” So no matter how hectic the production schedule gets, Eastwood always makes sure to plan regular trips to the great outdoors, from skydiving to spear fishing, and more recently bow hunting. These practices are built on an appreciation for wilderness that started with trips into the woods of Northern California with his father. How did your love for the outdoors begin? For a while I lived with my mother in Hawaii, so I have always loved being around the water. Then I moved to be with my father, and he was very much into fishing when I was younger. Some of my first memories of him are around fishing for trout in Northern California. My father was actually a state parks commissioner after he was mayor. I like to think I’m following his footsteps in that respect as well. That is why I am so into public lands issues, because they were a big part of my childhood.
Getting to spend time in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Tahiti, has been incredible. Featured here is the black tip reef shark. These often misunderstood species must be protected. What is the last fishing trip you took? This summer I went to San Clemente Island for an epic diving and fishing trip. It is one of my favorite places to go, and close to where I live in San Diego. I got my first Bluefin tuna, which has been a goal for some time. They start running when it is colder, so we just went at the right time. I have gotten Mahi before, but always wanted to shoot a Bluefin. Glad I can check that off the list.
Incredible trip so far in the Rocky Mountains. It’s broken us all at times. But in the end made us all stronger. That’s life, if you get out there and push your limits, it Makes you a better version of your self. Hope to never stop pushing mine!!!! More recently you got into bow hunting? I picked it up a few years ago, but before now I went off and on. I’ve started to get into it more now and I recently got a new Hoyt. I am most excited to go on some bow hunting trips with Cameron Hanes. That guy is one of the most badass bow hunters of our time. I have been on a few hunts since then. What do you like about it? I think it is hunting on its highest level. People don’t realize you may go a whole season and not shoot a single thing. There is a lot of discipline involved. It’s very challenging because of how close you have to get. I think it’s the hardest sport we have. Do you have other rituals? I try to go backpacking every summer, usually to Yosemite. I like to get out to places where you can’t take a car. Going 15 to 20 miles away. Do it for a few days, I enjoy the feeling that 30 miles away from any house with electricity. The best thing about Yosemite is you don’t have to bring any water with you. Just bring a water pump and get it right from a stream into your CamelBak. What do you ride out there? I have a Ford F150 that gets me wherever I need to go. Have to ask, if you had to write a car into the next Fast & Furious movie for your character, what would it be? No question, the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder I think you should call Chris Morgan and have him throw that in there for you. That is exactly what I’ll do. I’ll call Chris Morgan right now and tell him my idea for the next movie. Opening scene, Little Nobody runs down the open road in a California Spyder. I know it costs 40 million dollars, but hear me out. Sounds pretty good to me. Overdrive hits theaters October 6th.
