Last fall Trek and Tome Software announced an AI-based bicycle-to-vehicle, or B2V, program that would help car drivers send alerts ahead of potential danger road areas. Now, the two companies are partnering with Ford to make the technology even better. B2V will now integrate Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology, or C-V2X, that will further aid in its goal of cyclist-safety, according to a statement from Trek. The C-V2X tech enables vehicles to communicate with “other vehicles, pedestrian devices, bikes and roadside infrastructure, such as traffic signs and construction zones.” It will also allow electronics integration on bicycles and have a downloadable mobile app.

The goal for the B2V platform is to open up communication between bikes, vehicles, and the rest of the environment in an effort to create the safest commute possible for everyone on the road. “Ford has been supportive of our mission to make cycling safer since day one and we all understand how important it is that B2V technology is open and shared,” said Tome CEO and founder Jake Sigal. For Trek, the program and technology are all about getting cyclists every possibility of a safe ride. “The future for us is moving from a more passive approach to cycling safety and focusing our development on active safety measures,” Trek Electronics Product Manager Scott Kasin said. “We want to ensure that while cyclists have the tools and knowledge to do what they can to create a safer experience, they will now have the enhanced ability to communicate their presence directly to vehicles.” For further updates on B2V and C-V2X check in with Tome.
